How Do Latinas Experience Hollywood? A PUBLIC SYMPOSIUM

PACIFIC STANDARD TIME: LA/LA AT THE ACADEMY

Featuring directors Natalia Almada, Aurora Guerrero, Patricia Riggen and Fina Torres, producer Mónica Reina, publicist Ivette Rodriguez, writer-director Gabriela Tagliavini, writer Ligiah Villalobos, actress Aimee Garcia and casting director Carmen Cuba (schedules permitting); introduced by documentarian Lourdes Portillo; hosted by Evangeline Griego.

This dynamic evening will address the artistic aspirations and accomplishments of a diverse group of women working in film and entertainment on multiple fronts: from studios to independent projects, including features and television, in both the international and domestic arenas. Over the course of the evening they will share their journeys and insights with the audience.

Discussing their dreams, inspirations and challenges, these artists and industry professionals will reflect on such issues as the meaning of the image of Latinas on screen — and assumptions made behind the camera. They will explore how the creative process works in Hollywood and independently, the impact their stories and completed projects can make on the American culture. From their earliest exposure to their chosen professions, through the struggles of distributing their work, the group will delve into the reality of making it in a field where the percentage of Latinas, both on and behind the screen, is far lower than their share of the audience.

Con la presencia de las cineastas Natalia Almada, Aurora Guerrero, Patricia Riggen y Fina Torres; la productora Mónica Reina; la publicista Ivette Rodríguez; las guionistas Gabriella Tagliavini y Ligiah Villalobos y la directora de casting Carmen Cuba; el panel será presentado por la documentalista Lourdes Portillo.

Este panel se enfocará en analizar las aspiraciones y logros artísticos de un grupo diverso de mujeres que trabajan en diferentes puestos del campo del cine y del entretenimiento: abarcando proyectos de cine producidos por los estudios o independientes, incluyendo largometrajes, documentales y televisión, local e internacional.

Al compartir sus metas iniciales, influencias y retos encontrados, estas artistas y profesionales de la industria reflexionaran sobre temas como estereotipos y construcción de la imagen de la mujer latina en el cine, el funcionamiento del proceso creativo, y la influencia cultural ejercida por narrativas de cine. Abarcando desde sus comienzos en el campo del cine hasta los obstáculos encontrados en la distribución de sus trabajos, el panel abordará la realidad de lograr realizar una carrera en un campo donde el porcentaje de mujeres latinas detrás y delante de las cámaras es mucho menor al porcentaje de mujeres latinas que conforman parte de la audiencia.
