About the program
ACADEMY VISUAL HISTORY PROGRAM
The Academy’s Oral History Projects department was founded in December 2012 and has recorded over 185 interviews to date, an average of 35 interviews (or 140 hours) per year. Conducted by film scholars, subject specialists or trained oral historians, the interviews, generally 4 to 5 hours in length, provide an in-depth exploration of the filmmaker’s life and career.
Through the work of OHP, the Academy has also become the primary preservation repository for filmmaker interviews from the guilds and other sources. Over 1,500 interviews have been collected and over 700 digitally preserved, and the department has formed an alliance with its partners to co-produce interviews. Prior to the establishment of the department, the Margaret Herrick Library conducted over 70 long-form audio oral histories. The audio from this historic collection has now been preserved and the transcripts are available in the library.
