LA CIÉNAGA (2001)

PACIFIC STANDARD TIME: LA/LA AT THE ACADEMY

Screening of Janus digital print. 101 minutes.

Panelists to be announced.

Written and directed by Lucrecia Martel. Produced by Lita Stantic.

Cast: Mercedes Morán, Graciela Borges, Martín Adjemián, Silvia Bayle, Juan Cruz Bordeu, Daniel Valenzuela.

In her feature film directorial debut, Lucrecia Martel explores the relationships between two large, overwrought families during a hot summer in provincial Argentina. The families’ differing socio-economic standing becomes a festering issue, as do the approaches of the parents to raising their squabbling children. Martel’s beautifully crafted film does not romanticize life outside urban spaces, and La Ciénaga has become an integral part of the New Argentine Cinema.
