Featuring a 7 p.m. pre-show performance by LA Cuban All Stars and a presentation on Cuban film posters by Sandra Levinson, Executive Director of the Center for Cuban Studies, Beth Rosenblum, Ph.D., Carol A. Wells, founder and Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics and curator of the “Hollywood in Havana” poster exhibition at the PMCA, Susana Smith Bautista, Executive Director of the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Panelist: actor Mirta Ibarra. Moderated by Luciano Castillo, director of the Cuban Film Archive in Havana.

Directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Juan Carlos Tabío. Produced by Miguel Mendoza. Screenplay by Senel Paz, based on his short story “The Wolf, the Forest and the New Man.”

Cast: Jorge Perugorría, Vladimir Cruz, Mirta Ibarra, Francisco Gattorno, Joel Angelino, Marilyn Solaya.

Fresa y Chocolate, Cuba’s only Foreign Language Film Award nominee to date, explores political tensions in Castro’s Cuba in the 1970s, especially in regard to the oppression of the gay community. It follows the burgeoning friendship between naïve college student David (Vladimir Cruz) and political rebel Diego (Jorge Perugorría), as they negotiate society’s expectations of them as men, revolutionaries, artists and friends. American critics praised the film, expressing surprise at its sophisticated and frank treatment of sexuality and Cuban politics.

Hasta la feche, Fresa y Chocolate es la única película cubana en recibir una nominación en la categoría de Mejor Película Extranjera. La película explora las tensiones políticas de la Cuba castrista durante la década de los 70s, especialmente la represión de la comunidad homosexual. La trama se centra en la amistad de un ingenuo estudiante universitario David (Vladimir Cruz) y Diego (Jorge Perugorría), un rebelde político. Por medio de conversaciones ambos negocian las demandas de su sociedad como revolucionarios, artistas y amigos.

La crítica estadounidense alabó la película ante su sorprendente, sofisticada y honesta exploración de la sexualidad y política en Cuba.
